Greg Nice Through the Decades: From the Feather Leather Weather Archives

Greg Nice (1987)

Rap blogging is generally thought to have launched in the early 2000s, reaching its apex of influence in the mid to late part of the decade, earning the eternal gratitude of the talentless everywhere (mostly southern rappers). Gossiping Bitches has uncovered a previously unrecognized piece of internet hip-hop history, the first rap blog. The Feather Leather Weather predates all rap blogs, and even the notion of expressing inconsequential opinions on the internet itself. Yes, that far back!

In this edition of the FLW archives, we revisit its interviews with rapper / dancer / life improver Greg Nice of Nice & Smooth. These Q&A excerpts from four different decades show a man both comfortable with who he is and able to meet the challenges of changing times.

DJD: Yo Greg, you had your day, but I heard the Blazing Hot advance, and it is neither blazing nor hot. How you not gonna update your steez at all? You rap the same way you did ten years ago, son!

SWRE: Mr. Nice, you are enjoying something of a creative renaissance, thanks to the nostalgia of old fans and the enthusiasm of younger fans who may not know you from the old days, but rather your current ventures into electronic music that will definitely stand the test of time. As you look back at the breadth of your career, in the historical context of hip-hop as a whole, which in my opinion is the only essential art form of the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries, what do you find most significant in terms of its cultural import?
