“In Search Of: The Next DJ Shadow”

When URB magazine recently decided it needed to manufacture the next DJ Shadow in order to create a new media darling it could call its own, the GBs were on top of it. Inside you will find the discarded applications of various hip-hop notables, recovered from the recycling bins at URB’s offices.

Apparently, someone somewhere has declared that hip-hop is now 30 and everyone — television networks, record labels, commentators — has taken the opportunity to blabber on and on about its history and social significance. Not to be outdone, and motivated by professional jealousy, the GBs set about writing our own hip-hop retrospective. Sadly, initial enthusiasm gave way to eventual boredom, and we stopped about 2 paragaphs into it. Luckily, one of our readers has done the job for us, as he has related his own hip-hop experience in a way we think is both eloquent and instructive.</em></p>

Yeah, it’s a new year with new fears, but before we play a friendly game of Who Can Ruin Whose Career, let’s cover a few basics. There are tons of gossipy rumors flying around–some of them many years old, some of them pretty new, all of them juicy. So before we start punching throats in the ’04, we Gossiping Bitches wanted to start addressing some of these rumors so you can know what’s fact and what’s fiction. So we now present to you the first installment: Gossip 101.
