Sydney, Australia — Hiphop males have always thought themselves to be exclusive to the trend known as “backpacker.” However, the male ego must have been served a serious blow this week, when the Miss Backpacker 2004 competition went down at the KingsX Hotel in Sydney, Australia.
Many of the attendants were British backpacker males, who were lured by the promise of “ravishing bosomed beauties.” The women of the contest were up for a chance to win A$1,000 ($781).
“I’ve always wanted to do something like this but never had the guts to in London,” said Amy Fernandez, a 20-year-old with tattoos and a Columbia-brand backpack.
“My mum’s a big lesbian, if she knew I was doing this, she’d kill me,” said Fernandez, who lists her hobbies as drinking and soccer.
Contestants are marked on the tidiness of their backpack, overall presentation, backpack contents, and freestyling/cypher capabilities. The most taxing question they have to answer is what they like about hiphop.
The KingsX Hotel, which also runs Britpop discos, karaoke and screenings of British soap operas, is just one of hundreds of pubs and hostels across the country looking to lure backpackers through their doors, most with offers of free Phillies Blunts & the complete cLOUDDEAD library on-hand for DJ’ing lessons.
It is now trademarking Miss Backpacker, and launching a Mr Backpacker follow-up to the contest which pulls in four times the average number of white people in any given week.
